The amount of time people spend in front of screens has increased substantially in recent years and living in a digitally connected world only makes it harder to get away from them. Just ask yourself what do you do when you realize you need to take a break from your computer, odds are you grab your phone and start scrolling. While studies have shown that looking at screens does not significantly impact vision, it does have an impact on the eyes’ muscles which can cause fatigue and strain. This presentation will discuss the hazards associated extended periods of screen time along with some techniques and exercises to help reduce the impact of our daily screen usage.

I gave blood for over 30 years before I found out that the Red Cross also did disasters. (I've had to stop at 100 pints - they won't allow me to give blood anymore). I have been a volunteer with disaster cycle services (DCS) for 13 1/2 years now. Preparedness programs are part of DCS as that is what we talk about with groups before a disaster happens. I started in DCS with responding to house fires where the residents request help from the Red Cross, then added preparedness programs later. The Red Cross has 3 programs - Prepare with Pedro for grades K-2, Pillowcase Project for grades 3-5 and Be Red Cross Ready for grade 6-adult. Currently, I am also the regional deployment lead for our 47 counties in Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana, so I lead a team of people who send others to national deployments.

"Doc" Kennedy will provide an interactive discussion about recognizing workplace stress and violence.
Dr. William (Doc) Kennedy is a husband and father of two adult children. He’s a business consultant and sports, clinical, and forensic psychologist based in Wilmington Ohio. He graduated from Wilmington College (’91), where he received degrees in psychology and mathematics. He then attended the School of Professional Psychology (SOPP) at Wright State University, graduating with his doctorate in clinical psychology in 1995.
Dr. Kennedy worked as a prison psychologist conducting risk assessments, sex offender evaluations, pre-parole evaluations, and providing services and therapy in a state correctional facility. He directed the clinical portion of the Duke E. Ellis Institute, a community based mental health and training facility in Dayton, Ohio. Dr. Kennedy also directed mental health services at Wilberforce University. Currently, he maintains a full time private practice and consulting practice in Wilmington, Ohio.
As a clinical psychologist, Dr. Kennedy works with individuals and families around various mental health related issues. As a sports psychologist, Dr. Kennedy consults with amateur and professional athletes and organizations to help improve performance, prevent injuries and reduce recovery time, and improve group dynamics and cohesion. As a forensic psychologist, Dr. Kennedy works with the courts, law enforcement, and attorneys conducting risk assessments, not guilty by reason of insanity assessments, custody related issues, and treatment.
Dr. Kennedy also has 30 years of experience in martial arts. He holds the Master Rank of Go Dan (5th degree black belt), in Chi-mu Toruku Jitsu. He is a founder of Team Torque Martial Arts, a martial arts program also located in Wilmington with the mission of connecting mental health, physical health, and safety & security. Team Torque offers traditional classes, therapeutic based martial arts, and self-protection training.
As a consultant and trainer, Dr. Kennedy works with individuals, and various sized businesses in areas including project development and problem solving, executive coaching, mission and vision development, and planning. Dr. Kennedy has been the evaluator for a federally-funded violence prevention program involving 19 states and the District of Columbia. Dr. Kennedy provides training and seminars for organizations such as OSHA around workplace violence. He developed the ADAPT model of self-protection for healthcare professionals, teaching it to healthcare agencies and through the Ohio BWC.
Dr. Kennedy consults extensively with private and nonprofit businesses around safety issues. Threat assessment, workplace safety, de-escalation hostile employees, and training around safety and security are all topics that are frequently addressed. He is also a consultant to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Department and an advisor to the Wilmington Police Department and on their hostage negotiation team.

The more things we experience, we should be better equipped to repeat successes as well as improve deficiencies in the future. But are we doing things right? Children have fewer experiences than adults, but are there things they do better than us? What can we learn from children that translates to keep us safe as adults?

She has worked for Domtar since 2001, where she was hired into the Finance department. She quickly began taking on a dual role and managing HR as well. In 2008, she transitioned from Finance and in addition to the existing HR role began a role as Safety/Environmental Coordinator. While in the safety role, she successfully completed various training courses such as HPI (Human Performance Initiatives), ISO14001, and the OSHA 40 hour. She was trained as an internal Domtar incident investigator in addition to being a corporate safety auditor. Sue has been certified as a Safestart and incident investigation trainer. As safety and wellness go hand in hand, she is a member of her site’s wellness team and as such takes an active part in and chairs wellness activities. Although in 2016, her official safety position ended, Sue continues to be very active in safety in Domtar and in 2022 transitioned to the role of site Production Manager.

OCAPP is a non-regulatory program within the Ohio EPA and Amber provides technical assistance for Ohio EPA’s regulatory programs. Amber has worked for Ohio EPA for 23 years and prior to this position was an inspector in the hazardous waste program at the Ohio EPA Bowling Green district office and an air pollution control inspector at the Columbus district office. Amber has an undergraduate degree in Animal Biology from Middle Tennessee State University. Prior to working at the Ohio EPA, Amber worked in two national parks. Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland and Haleakala National Park in Hawaii.

SPEAKER BIO: Amber Hicks, Environmental Specialist, Ohio EPA
Amber Hicks is an environmental specialist with the Office of Compliance Assistance and Pollution (OCAPP) in the Dayton district/field office. OCAPP is a non-regulatory program within the Ohio EPA and Amber provides technical assistance for Ohio EPA’s regulatory programs. Amber has worked for Ohio EPA for 23 years and prior to this position was an inspector in the hazardous waste program at the Ohio EPA Bowling Green district office and an air pollution control inspector at the Columbus district office. Amber has an undergraduate degree in Animal Biology from Middle Tennessee State University. Prior to working at the Ohio EPA, Amber worked in two national parks. Assateague Island National Seashore in Maryland and Haleakala National Park in Hawaii.
