June 5th -- Fall Protection & Drop Demonstration; Barry Gullickson, 3M Fall Protection Specialist, Ohio Region (RSVP HERE)
Barry Gullickson will present "Fall Protection" on June 5th with a Drop Demonstration Truck, including 3 drops showing forces exerted on the body during a fall with a restraint, fall arrest lanyard, and SRL. The presentation will include:
- Proper donning of a harness
- Common misuses of fall protection equipment
- ABCD of Fall Protection
- Briefly cover Rescue
- Prior to Use Inspection
The demonstration will be weather permitting.

May 1st -- Hazard Mapping; Jeff Curry, Safety and Compliance Manager, Connection
This topic will provide an interactive activity and discussion about identifying and addressing hazards in our work environments (and beyond!) presented by our very own Safety Council steering committee member, Jeff Curry, Safety and Compliance Manager, with Connection.
- About Jeff:
Jeff Curry has worked as the Safety and Compliance Manager at Connection in Wilmington, Ohio, since 2006, with many years of previous safety experience. Jeff is an active member of our HFC Steering Committee. He received a BA from Wilmington College.
April 3rd -- Safety Awards Ceremony & How to Prepare for an Industrial Commission Hearing; Felicity M. Hillmer, Regional Manager, Ohio Industrial Commission
Felicity Hillmer, Regional Manager of the Ohio Industrial Commission, will present on “How to Prepare for an Industrial Commission Hearing” at our April 3rd HFC meeting. The presentation will include discussion on:
- What to expect at an Industrial Commission hearing
- Best practices on how to prepare for a hearing
- Common mistakes that employers make (and how to avoid them)

MORE ABOUT FELICITY:
Graduate of the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University and Denison University.
Spent 8 years in private practice focusing exclusively in the area of defense side labor and employment law, with an emphasis on employment discrimination defense and employer-employee relations. This included advising public and private sector organizations, including a 52 library consortium, individual libraries statewide, county boards and private institutions of higher education on personnel issues and federal labor law compliance.
Joined the Ohio Industrial Commission as a District Hearing Officer in the Toledo region then transferred to the Columbus Regional Office and was promoted to Staff Hearing Officer and Regional Manager. In that capacity supervises the 30 hearing officers in the region, which covers 44 counties and has offices in Columbus, Cambridge, Logan, Portsmouth and Mansfield. Conducts all level of administrative hearings including as a Deputy for the full Commission, participates in depositions on behalf of the Commission and assists in the training of new hearing officers.
Moonlights as a fitness instructor and instructor trainer for the YMCA of Central Ohio and teaches yoga.
March 13th -- Highland County: Guidelines for Employers to Reduce Motor Vehicle Crashes; Joe Koehl, BWC Loss Prevention Supervisor
Roadway Motor Vehicle Crashes are the leading cause of workplace fatalities, at 24% nationally. Pedestrian related fatalities add another 7% for a total of 31%. What can employers do? Joe Koehl, BWC Loss Prevention Supervisor, will present on OSHA’s “Guidelines for Employers to Reduce Motor Vehicle Crashes”. Employers can use this 10-step program to develop or enhance their Fleet/Driver Safety Program, if they have 1 casual driver or 100 CDL Drivers. The program focuses on sound management principles and is not intended to cover all local, state or federal regulatory guidelines.
February 6th -- Clinton County: Safety for the Non-Safety Professional
This topic will provide an overview of the importance of safety and the basic elements of an effective safety program presented by our very own Safety Council professionals, Debora Roth and Will Satterfield.

- About Debora & Will:
Debora Roth is an ergonomic consultant with the BWC. She has served the state of Ohio for over 20 years in various roles, working with communities, businesses and industries on safety and environmental issues. She has experience in consulting, management, compliance, and enforcement. Ms. Roth is a professional engineer.
Will has been an occupational safety and health professional for over 26 years. 24 of those years have been with the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation as an Industrial Safety Consultant Specialist, providing advice and consultation to Ohio employers on a variety of occupational safety issues.
He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from West Liberty State College and a Master of Science degree in Safety Management from West Virginia University. He is recognized as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals.

We will be playing "BWC Jeopardy" for our last meeting of 2018! Hosted by our BWC representatives, Tim & Tom, BWC Jeopardy will test your knowledge of current health, safety, and workers compensation topics.
November 7th: Clinton County
- November 7th -- Clinton County: Safety Awareness, Colonel Brian L. Prickett – Chief Deputy
This topic will include the answers to questions like: Why do we need to be aware of our safety and security? What is Situational awareness? Why is this important to the security of your office?
About Brian:
Colonel Brian L. Prickett began his career with the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office in 1984 as a certified peace officer assigned to the corrections division. Upon completing a two year assignment in corrections, Colonel Prickett was assigned to the road patrol division where he held positions of Canine Officer, Patrol Sergeant, and Patrol Lieutenant. After being promoted to the rank of Captain, Colonel Prickett was tasked with oversight of the corrections and road patrol divisions. In 1999, primary duties turned to the planning and construction of a new Sheriff’s Office and Adult Detention Facility. Upon completion of the Sheriff’s Office and Adult Detention Facility, Colonel Prickett held the positon of Jail Administrator until June of 2004 when he was promoted to Chief Deputy where his current duties involve the day-to-day operation and function of the entire Sheriff’s Office.
Colonel Prickett is a 1983 graduate of Wilmington High School and attended the Greene County Peace Officers Training Academy in 1984 where he completed the basic law enforcement academy. In 2000, Colonel Prickett completed Corrections Basic Training for Full Service Jails at the Pickaway County Sheriff’s Academy, and completed Correctional Administrator Training for Full Service Jails at the Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy in London, Ohio. In 2008, Colonel Prickett was nominated to, and graduated from the F.B.I. National Academy, 235th Session in Quantico, Virginia. The FBI National Academy is a professional course of study for U.S. and international law enforcement leaders that serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide. Colonel Prickett holds an Associate’s Degree of Applied Science in Law Enforcement Technology from Southern State Community College, and a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Public Safety Management from Franklin University.
October 3rd: Fayette County
- October 3rd -- Fayette County: “How do I tell if an employee may have a substance abuse issue and what do I do?;" Jonathan Bennett, Executive Director, Pickaway Area Recovery Services
Jonathan Bennett is the Executive Director of Pickaway Area Recovery Services. With over 7 years in the field, he previously served as Executive Planner and Associate Director. He also taught at both the high school and university levels. He has a BA from Ohio University and an MTS from Emory University.
He has provided Drug Free Workplace training to multiple businesses throughout the central Ohio area. This presentation will cover many aspects of that training, including: signs of drug use and dependence on the job, employee assistance programs, developing effective policies and procedures, understanding the different types of drugs, and how to avoid pitfalls as a supervisor.
September 5th: Highland County
- September 5th -- Highland County: The Seven Sins of Safety; Sue Wiggins, Domtar
"The Seven Sins of Safety" will include some fun illustrations to demonstrate some very real safety traps that everyone falls into at one time or another. We will be asking for audience volunteers, so come prepared!!
About Sue:
Sue Wiggins graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH with a double major in Psychology and Business Management. She has worked for Domtar since 2001, where she was hired into the Finance department. She quickly began taking on a dual role and managing HR as well. In 2008, she transitioned from Finance and in addition to the existing HR role began a role as Safety/Environmental Coordinator. While in the safety role, she successfully completed various training courses such as HPI (Human Performance Initiatives), ISO14001, and the OSHA 40 hour. She is an internal Domtar incident investigator in addition to being a corporate safety auditor. Sue has been certified as a Safestart and incident investigation trainer. As safety and wellness go hand in hand, she is a member of her site’s wellness team and as such takes an active part in all wellness activities. Although in 2016, her official safety position ended, Sue continues to be very active in safety in Domtar and in the community.
