Did you know that if every home had smoke alarms, almost 900 lives could be saved each year? In this month's presentation, Chad Hamilton, Assistant Chief of Paint Creek Joint EMS & Fire District, will be reviewing common workplace fire hazards and ways to fix them, home fire safety, fire extinguisher use, and how to extinguish cooking fires and evacuation plans.
Chad Hamilton has been active in the public safety community for 19 years, in which he has worked in both public and private sectors. His current position, which he has held for 6 years, is the Assistant Chief of Paint Creek Joint EMS & Fire District. The district currently services 342 square miles, spanning three counties, with primary 911 coverage. The District responds to over 4,000 requests for medical aid and over 500 fire responses.
Education and prevention have been an important part of Chad's public safety career and, as such, he currently holds certifications of Fire Fighter I & II, Fire Officer, Fire Safety Inspector, Continuing Education Instructor, Ohio Paramedic Certification, American Heart BLS Instructor, and Advanced Stroke Life Support Instructor.

Kay has presented in 38 states and Canada for over 25 years. She holds a Master's Degree in Business Administration, a degree in Physical Education and a 4th degree black belt in karate. She was also a family caregiver for 7 years.
Kay is the author of “The Funny Thing about Stress; A Seriously Humorous Guide to a Happier Life.”
When it comes to humor, Kay is the "real deal" having performed as a professional standup comedian for many years and appearing on a number of national television and radio programs including Lifetime Cable’s “Girls Night Out” and NBC’s “America’s Funniest People”. She also lived and performed in New York City where she appeared at the nation’s top comedy clubs such as “The Improvisation” and “Catch a Rising Star.”

Patricia Brinkman is an Assistant Professor and Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Educator with Ohio State University Extension. Her specialization is nutrition and health. She has taught on various parts of nutrition and health throughout the state and at national conferences.
Her presentation focused on eating the correct portions and eating better to reduce your risk of heart disease and other chronic diseases. Her presentation will include a PowerPoint, handouts and visual models of correct portion sizes.

In his informative presentation, Rich discussed the health, social, and safety effects of working outside the usual 8-hour day shift. He also identified strategies for minimizing the negative impact of shift work to help ensure that employees stay healthy and safe when working off shifts.

At our December 3rd meeting, HFC steering committee member, Sue Wiggins, presented a variety of different wellness initiatives for large and small corporations. These initiatives included: vending machine options, giveaways, daily challenges, team/individual competitions, and more.

Sue Wiggins graduated from Wittenberg University in Springfield, OH with a double major in Psychology and Business Management. She has worked for Domtar since 2001, where she was hired in to begin taking on the role of Human Resources. However, in addition to HR, she has also taken on the role of Safety/Environmental Coordinator for the past 6 years. She has successfully completed various safety and environmental training courses, such as HPI (Human Performance Initiatives), ISO14001, and the OSHA 40 hour. She is an internal Domtar incident investigator for her region and is a corporate safety auditor. Sue is a certified trainer for SafeStart and Incident Investigation. As safety and wellness go hand in hand, she is a member of her site’s wellness committee and takes a very active part in all wellness programs.

Employers wanting to improve the health and wellness of their workers can benefit from the Ohio BWC's newest program, the Workplace Wellness Grant Program (WWGP). It provides funding to assist employers in establishing training and programs to reduce health risk factors specific to their employees.
BWC established WWGP to study the effect of a wellness program in the workplace on bringing down incidence and cost of accidents and illnesses. The goal is to control the escalating cost of workers' compensation claims through addressing health risk factors. The WWGP's collateral goals are also to reduce health-care costs for employers, as well as improve the health of the workforce.
A workplace wellness program consists of the following tools:

On November 5, 2014, LuAnn Winkle, Executive Director of Turning Point Applied Learning Center, presented a highly informative discussion on "Substance Abuse and the Workplace: The Opiate Epidemic and its Implications for Businesses."
Since 2004, LuAnn has served as the Executive Director of Turning Point Applied Learning Center, an Ohio Department of Corrections’ State-Certified Reentry Program that provides transitional jobs and employment training for public assistance recipients, ex-offenders and disadvantaged residents of the Highland County region. We will be holding an HFC tour of Turning Point on Friday, December 5th, to learn more about their initiatives. Please stay tuned for more details on that event.
Her presentation covered the alarming trends of prescription opioids and heroin abuse throughout our tri-county region and the State of Ohio. She also discussed the financial and human impact of substance abuse on the workplace, as well as resources for employers.

Aaron Beck with Proto Tools kicked off another exciting year of safety council with a Hand Tool Safety Training & Demonstration on Wednesday, September 3rd, in Highland County.
